Running out of gas between exits on I-12 or I-55 near Hammond happens more than people admit, especially on the open stretches toward Baton Rouge or across the swamp toward LaPlace. Book fuel delivery and get enough to reach a station.
If the gauge is low and you're about to cross the Manchac swamp on I-55, fill up in Hammond or Ponchatoula first. There are few places to stop on the bridge.
Traffic on I-12 often backs up between Hammond and Walker, and idling in a long slowdown burns fuel faster than highway cruising. If the light comes on in a jam, get off at the next exit rather than hoping to make it to Baton Rouge.
What to expect
Fuel delivery brings enough fuel to get you to the nearest station when you've run out. Add your vehicle in the app so the driver brings the right fuel, and stay with the car somewhere safe. When you get to a station, fill up fully. Running a tank to empty can also strain the fuel pump.
A tip for Hammond drivers
The I-55 bridge over the Manchac swamp south of town has little room to stop. If a tire is going soft, it's usually safer to keep going slowly to the nearest exit than to stop on the bridge.
